What to Wear to a Bridal Shower

A bridal shower sits in an odd space. It is more intimate than the wedding, more considered than a casual lunch, and usually held somewhere pretty in the middle of the day. There is rarely a dress code on the invitation, which leaves most guests guessing. Here is how we think about dressing for one, whether you are hosting, attending, standing beside the bride or being the bride.

What should you wear to a bridal shower?

Wear a mini or midi dress in a light, feminine fabric, styled for daytime. Think soft colours, florals, delicate textures and a low or block heel. Bridal showers are usually daytime events held in a garden, a home or a private dining room, so aim for polished daywear rather than evening dressing. Leave white to the bride.

That is the short version. The details depend on where the shower is being held, what time it starts, and what role you are playing on the day.

Reading the invitation

Bridal shower invitations rarely name a dress code, but they usually give you two clues that matter more than a code would: the venue and the start time.

A home or garden, midday start

The most common format. This is daytime dressing at its most relaxed. A floral mini, a linen blend midi or an easy slip in a soft colour all work. Consider the ground and the seating. If you will be on grass or a low outdoor lounge, choose a length you can move in comfortably and a heel that will not sink.

A restaurant or private dining room

A step more structured. A fitted mini or a tailored midi in crepe or a textured weave is right. Because these events are seated and often photographed at the table, pay attention to necklines and how the dress sits from the waist up.

High tea or a hotel venue

The dressiest end. This is where you can bring in satin, a defined silhouette and a proper heel. Our event dresses collection covers this level well without tipping into evening wear.

An afternoon that runs into evening

Some showers are now scheduled to roll into dinner or drinks. If the invitation hints at that, choose a dress that can carry both. A dark floral, a satin midi or a structured mini all change character once the light drops and you swap accessories.

Can guests wear white to a bridal shower?

Generally no. White, ivory and cream belong to the bride, and bridal showers are one of the events where she is most likely to wear white herself. The convention is slightly softer than it is at the wedding, and a white floral print or a dress with white as a background colour will usually pass without comment. A solid white dress will not.

If the invitation asks for an all white theme, which some hosts now do, follow it. The bride will differentiate herself another way.

What the bride wears to her own bridal shower

White, and confidently. The bridal shower is one of the few occasions before the wedding where the bride is expected to wear white, and many brides treat it as a chance to wear a shorter, lighter, less formal version of bridal dressing than they will on the day.

What works well:

  • A structured white mini with a defined waist, which photographs cleanly and reads celebratory without reading formal.
  • A soft ivory midi in crepe or satin for a garden or high tea setting.
  • Texture over embellishment. Broderie, pintucking and subtle beading feel appropriate for daytime in a way that heavy crystal does not.

Our white and ivory edit is built for exactly this stretch of the wedding calendar, covering the shower, the rehearsal dinner and the day after the wedding.

What bridesmaids wear to a bridal shower

Bridesmaids are usually hosting, which means you will be moving. Carrying plates, greeting guests, running the games nobody admits to enjoying. Practicality matters more here than it does for the average guest.

Loose coordination works better than matching. Many bridal parties choose a shared palette rather than a shared dress, which keeps the group photos cohesive without looking like a rehearsal for the wedding. If you are choosing a palette for the party, our guide to bridesmaid dress colours covers which tones hold up across Australian seasons and skin tones.

Avoid anything strapless if you will be on your feet all afternoon, and choose a fabric that does not crease the moment you sit down.

Dressing for the Australian season

Bridal showers are scheduled around the wedding, which in Australia means most fall in spring and autumn, with a run of them through summer. What works here is not what works in a northern hemisphere guide.

Spring, September to November

The classic bridal shower season. Florals, pastels and fresh greens all sit naturally. Watch the wind if the event is outdoors and choose a hemline with a little weight to it.

Summer, December to February

Heat is the deciding factor. Breathable fabrics, lighter colours, straps rather than sleeves. If the shower is outdoors in December or January, look for a dress with an open back or a relaxed shape rather than anything fitted and lined.

Autumn, March to May

The most flattering light of the year for photographs. Deeper tones, richer fabrics and midi lengths come into their own. A dress with sleeves will carry you through a cooler afternoon better than a wrap you will end up holding.

Winter, June to August

Almost always indoors, often a high tea. Long sleeves, heavier crepes and deeper colours are appropriate, and a closed toe heel or a heeled boot finishes the look properly.

What to avoid

  • Solid white, ivory or cream, unless you are the bride or the theme calls for it.
  • Evening dressing. Floor length gowns, heavy beading and deep necklines read wrong at a daytime event.
  • Anything strapless if you are hosting or in the bridal party.
  • The dress you plan to wear to the wedding. Many of the same guests will be at both.
  • Heels that need firm ground, if the shower is in a garden.

Frequently asked questions

What is the dress code for a bridal shower?

Most bridal showers have no stated dress code. The default is daytime smart casual, which means a mini or midi dress in a light fabric with a low or block heel. Let the venue and start time set the formality.

Can you wear black to a bridal shower?

Yes, though it is less common than at an evening event. Black works well for an indoor shower, a winter date or a restaurant setting. For a garden shower in spring or summer, a lighter colour or a print will usually feel more appropriate.

Should a bridal shower dress be long or short?

Short or mid length. A mini or midi is the standard for a bridal shower, and floor length reads as overdressed for a daytime event unless the invitation specifies otherwise.

What does the bride wear to her bridal shower?

White or ivory, in a lighter and less formal silhouette than her wedding dress. A structured white mini or a soft ivory midi is the usual choice, keeping embellishment subtle so it reads as daytime rather than bridal formal.

Is a bridal shower the same as a hens party?

No. A bridal shower is a daytime celebration, usually hosted by the bridal party or a family member, with a broader guest list that often includes older relatives. A hens party is typically an evening or weekend event with a smaller, closer group. The dressing is different for each, and a bridal shower calls for the more restrained of the two.

Do you wear the same thing to the bridal shower and the wedding?

No. Choose different outfits. The guest lists overlap heavily and both events are photographed.

Where to start

Start with the time of day and the venue, then choose your length, then your colour. For daytime garden showers, our mini dresses are the easiest place to begin. For high tea and restaurant settings, browse event dresses. And if you are the bride, our white and ivory edit will carry you through every celebration between the engagement and the wedding.
